How to turn off screen but not sleep to play audio ?

by Ptarmigan » August 8th, 2015, 7:52 pm

I want to turn off the screen ( to save power )
but not let it sleep ( so that I can continue playing flac files in foobar2000 )
( although it is a Linx 7 I suspect this may be a general problem ? So I have placed it here, mods please move if thought best )

This does not do what I expect :-
I go to Control Panel > Hardeware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings
where I change "Put the computer to sleep" to Never.
Then into Change Advanced Power Settings > Display > Turn off display after > 1 minute.
Then apply, ok, save changes, and exit.

It does turn the screen off after 1 minute and Foobar continues to play ok,
but to my surprise a short time later up pops the screen again showing the rainbow start-up picture (is that what is called the 'splash screen') and that persists. If I sweep it away my user screen displays briefly before bringing up the program last used ( like CPanel if I didnt close it previously) ) and the cycle is repeated !!

So, help please, where am I going wrong ?
How do I do this ?

(aside)
I have tried two little exe freeware LCD/Monitor off progs but one doesnt work ( need NET something or other) the second turns off the screen but also stops Foobar playing so it may infact be setting sleep :(

Xbox Music does (even more than) what I want, it continues playing audio even in sleep, but sadly only playing mp3 not flac :(
(/aside)

Thanks for reading, hope you can help cos it's driving me nuts :)

Problem seems to be with the foobar software switching screen back on.

You can disable the splash screen. See my post

viewtopic.php?f=36&t=1016

This may not solve the problem completely, but screen should turn off again after 1 minute?

Of course, you could convert flac files to mp3 format and use a different player.
There are other flac players as well eg winamp, aimp3.

I muddied the waters with my reasons (foobar etc) for wishing the screen to be off without sleep.
The odd behaviour happens without any other prog. or app (or foobar even) running.
The screen turns off ok after 1min, but pops back up with the rainbow screen after 5.2sec approx (as though it had just been woken up after sleep via the power button.)
This rainbow screen then persists regardless of the screen time-out specified :(

No one else getting this ?

Ok - getting rid of screen is easy - see second part of link in my earlier post (first part not relevant).

So question is why does pc keep waking up?

Need to ponder on this.

Good morning everyone,

Yesterday evening / last night I messaged all sorts of stuff about this problem, decided in the end I didnt know what I was talking about and was making too much noise ! So I edited most of it out and just left the little one above ( about the 5.2 sec ! etc ) and went to bed.

I had pruned it too hard and as a consequence lost the bit where I thanked you (Dan) for your previous link to getting rid of the Splash screen, sounds like a good line of attack ! but,
see second part of link in my earlier post (first part not relevant).
Yes the first part confounded me by not presenting me with the right tabs :(
and the second part, messing with the registry, makes me nervous - I could do a lot of damage with my fat fingers on the tiny screen. So I think I must live with things till I get a mouse and kbd. Meanwhile find another soln.

Thanks for the two latest reads, interesting stuff but I dont have a problem with waking up from sleep, when it goes to sleep it stays asleep !

Nevertheless I did the "powercfg -lastwake" in two cases
(A) power plan returned to default :-
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0

(B)Power plan Sleep = Never, Display off after 1min :-
Wake History Count - 1
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 0

So methinks I need to back up to basics and ask :

Can any linx owner set Sleep = Never and Advanced/Display =1min
and have it behave ( ie. not have the screen pop back up with the rainbow splash ) ?
Is this (1) a problem with Linx in general
or (2) a problem just with the Linx 7
or (3) a problem with me ! ie. am I doing something silly, got something mis-set, being very very stupid (entirly possible :) ) or ???

Sorry for causing so much noise

You should really try that regedit change - it is easy to do - you are only changing one number - vey unlikely to cause any problems. If you are really worried, make an image backup using Macrium Reflect Free.
