[GUIDE] Reflash the Linx Tablet Firmware (BIOS)

If you're gonna create a guide... stick it in here!

Kurosaru:

Yep, spot on... I kept away from Python as I've seen some inconsistencies within a certain distribution (doesn't affect simple scripting but ...).
I've got too many projects on the go just with these tablets to spend much time validating tools which should be rock solid.

At this stage, I want simple, easily portable instructions that is guaranteed to work with any Linux.

On the note of Python ive put together a basic Python script. I've included a copy of Flashrom for Windows (for use with a Bus-Pirate v3.4+ [firmware 5+]) and all the bios images, just on the offhand someone is same as me has bus-pirate laying around.

Usage:
./bios_patch.py --type=<7/8/10>

Tested on Win7, Win8 (python2.7), OSX 10.8, 10.9 and CentOS 6.4, Ubuntu 14.04.

Could you utilise an arduino (going low level here!) instead of the Pi? Thinking streaming the image over serial for the Arduino to flash it?

Hello,

I'm not familiar with the Ardunio myself (more of a PIC16/32 bod myself). I've had a quick scan of the docs... SPI is mentioned as well as pinouts for this, so as long as you can guarantee 3.3V then... Yes.

You can use just about anything that can handle SPI.. You can even use a 5V programmer, just drop the voltage with a 1k/2k potential divider to GND.

See You need to be registered to view this link, please log-in or register for the easiest solution for this aspect.

At the speeds we're using here, ringing isn't an issue. I'd suggest using a slower programming speed (if you actually have a choice with your software [or are you manually setting clock dividers?]) due to the length of the patch wires. Slow and accurate is preferable to any potential errors. Any decent software should verify anyway..

I had to add this to the config.txt on my pi:
dtparam=spi=on
then enable spi programming using raspi-config.
Everything else in the tutorial worked fine. Got my Linx10 back up running.

Only problem I have now is no +5v on any of the USB interfaces (I have to use a powered hub to connect anything now, and the origami keyboard doesn't work)

Many thanks for this. I will also take your idea for keeping a pi for flash programming :D since I have an old PI

Hello,

Thanks for this.
I didn't need this on my Pi or Pi2.. I'll look at this more closely when I've got the time.

can you do this with out a rasberry pi...? and off usb?? just seems a little extreme to buy all the kit just to fix a single tablet lol

Hello All,

You can use just about anything which supports SPI.. A small "gotcha" is that you need "Chip Select" connection (or one that can be configured as).

This one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251932290901? ... rmvSB=true costs under a fiver and works perfectly.

Software is free and is for windows.
