Is it safe to upgrade to Windows 10?

by rickster245 » October 11th, 2015, 9:11 pm

Hello,

I've had my Linx 8 tablet for a few months now. It's been running perfect on Windows 8.1.
As Windows 10 has been available for a while now, is it safe to upgrade my tablet to it?
Is there any official word from Exertis?
Lastly, are there any precautions I should take if I choose to upgrade?

Thanks.

Make a backup.
Macrium Reflect Free works on the linx 8.

If you have a backup then yes, it's safe. Anything goes wrong - and it shouldn't - you can revert and try again.

I wouldn't! I updated to Win 10 found the camera no longer worked went for a roll back now it's stuck in the "restoring to your previous version of Windows" loop, nightmare!!! So I have a useless 6 month old tablet at the moment, while Exteris not being helpful at all, very poor support tbh.

2 Days ago I'd say yes, I have two 8" Linx 8 tablets, I'd upgraded the first, slightly painful experience because it insisted on the screen being upside down, but easily resolved installing a driver from this site.

Thinking it went ok, it was time to do the other, not so much luck, despite both being installed with the same software, fully updated, this one refuses to install the touch screen drivers, the screen drivers have no auto turn enabled, basically an unusable machine.

Goodness knows what's the difference between the two machines, but something must have caused the problems.

So as far as I'm concerned it's 50:50 whether it will work, once loaded and working 10 is fine, but probably not worth the pain, if anything goes wrong.

It's a shame that it's not as simple as upgrading like you would on a laptop or desktop computer.
Any idea if Exertis will put out an official upgrade guide? I remember reading something like that on here.

I think there's very little chance of Exertis producing a guide - going from the mixed advice people seem to be getting from them.
The only difference in the upgrade process is that you have to manually delete a partition left over from windows 8 to get all your space back. Other than that you might have driver issues - same as on any other pc.

Based on the variation in upgrade experience, I think there may be a bit of a scatter on component specifications. I only needed the webcam driver - everything else worked from the get go, for example. Thus, the advice from the manufacturer will be perforce scattered. I had the problem when supporting around 1000 pcs (by IBM) in the 90s.
