OTG and charging the linx 8 - make it work with any hub

General chit-chat on the Linx 8

I'm using a 2A power supply, and from what I've seen the stub makes the difference between fast and slow charging.
Without it what I see is the charge staying level with the screen on and not doing much, charge going down slowly if it's working hard, charging when asleep (or off) - so it's pretty much good for a day's use and will re-charge when not being used. I think you could use it quite happily like that in most circumstances.
I haven't seen what Adam's describing, but I don't have the same psu.
Using a docking station or powered hub won't help it charge*, but it will mean you're not drawing anything extra from it IYSWIM.

@ Adam - I've ordered a usb ammeter from ebay - 99p - to check what's happening with the current with different configurations (and 'cos it's something else to mess with). It would be interesting to know what's going into the hub with your 3A charger (but you'd have to splash the cash!).

*Edit: a powered hub shouldn't be sending power downstream (ie to the linx). I guess the same is true for a dock. Anything else is breaking the usb standards - I have some cheap hubs that do that, but it's not a sign of a well-designed hub.

The hubs recommended for otg/power possibly have a wire to bypass the +ve supply around the hub, and supply power to the linx (or whatever) - but now I'm just guessing.

Don't think a standard multimeter would be very useful - you need to measure current going through the meter, so it needs to be inline. I ordered this, as an example:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291249160861

This is probably a lot better, but 5x the price:

I'll see how the cheapy goes.

thanks for the reply adamk357

was thinking about still using the cable with the docking station attached for the usb and video out as the monitor doesn't have hdmi, just didn't want to have the faff of the stub?

not sure ehat I'm doing wrong, my newly made cable charges but doesn't seem to have enough power for the usb. A usb stick flashes then goes dead?

Only the female connector is attached to white and green (end that plugs into the linx), power white and green not connected.

Have you plugged a hub into the female usb?

have rewired - it's a bit intermittent but does work direct with most usb sticks, have a four port non powered hub that works too. Not charging but presume I will need either a 3amp power block or the stub

Hey I you can't be bothered with the stub you could just twist the data cables together as oppose to plugging in the stub.

Are you using the sticks through the hub or directly on the usb cable?
It should be through the hub.
It shouldn't be intermittent.

both direct female and through the non powered hub.

I have just tried my belkin powered hub and found that I can add the usb power from my linx to the hub and although it doesn't charge it keeps it at a constant power level, I have my tosh 2tb portable usb drive in too. I'm guessing I can add a usb printer to this setup or perhaps buy a dock and use the dvi output.

Here are some pics
